Katherine of Alexandria

Discovering Katherine

London, England - 1980's
A carpenter working on the renovation of an old house makes an astounding discovery. Eventually, he entrusts this discovery to a friend who begins an investigation that will stretch over fifteen years..

Alexandria, Egypt - 1990
Armed with several years’ research, a small team travels to Egypt to investigate the legendary St. Katherine of Alexandria, a saint whose existence has been denied by the Vatican for over thirty years. The team, armed with their knowledge of the discovery from London, seek further evidence, but they return to England disappointed.

Ethiopia - 1998
One of the group visits Ethiopia and is taken under the wing of local people from a remote village, who are fascinated by the story of Katherine. The villagers offer to help, which results in the discovery of forty pages of a diary written by a woman called Jabal Ekatherina, and which appears to date back almost 1,700 years.

Sinai, Egypt - 1999
Translations (from its original ancient Greek) reveal that Ekatherina's diary mentions Jabal Musa, which is also known as Mount Sinai. The highest peak in this region is called Jabal Katrinah, or Mount Katherine. At the base of Mount Sinai lies the monastery of St. Katherine. Legend has it that her bones were carried there by monks after her death in 329AD.

Over the following three years, the team produces a detailed picture of St. Katherine’s life, her spiritual fight against Rome’s enforced pagan worship and her tragic execution at the hands of Emperor Maxentius.

London, England - May 2006
After a year of pre-production, Spiked Wheel Films begins shooting Katherine’s extraordinary story and ancient Rome’s decision to silence her. The veil of mystery surrounding St. Katherine of Alexandria can now be lifted.
